Tails has appeared in almost every Sonic game since his first appearance. He was first made playable in the Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. His first appearance was in Sonic 2 for the Game Gear, where he was kidnapped by Doctor Robotnik for a "hefty" ransom. Yasushi Yamaguchi, originally the main artist and zone designer for Sega's Sonic Team, designed Tails for an internal competition for a sidekick to Sonic. He can use his tails to propel himself into the air like a helicopter for a limited time. Miles Prower, better known by his nickname, Tails, is a two-tailed fox who is Sonic's best friend and sidekick. Main article: Tails ( Sonic the Hedgehog) The Sonic games keep a separate continuity from the Sonic the Hedgehog comics published by Archie Comics and other Sonic media and, as a result, feature a distinct yet overlapping array of many characters. The series features three fictional species, in order of appearance: Chao, which have usually functioned as digital pets and minor gameplay and plot elements Wisps, which have been used as power-ups and Koco, which when collected grant new abilities for Sonic, among other things. These have ranged from anthropomorphic animal characters such as Shadow the Hedgehog and Cream the Rabbit to robots created by Eggman such as Metal Sonic and E-123 Omega, as well as human characters such as Eggman's grandfather Gerald Robotnik. The series has introduced dozens of additional recurring characters over the years. All five of these have remained major characters and appeared in dozens of games. Sonic 3 introduced Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic's rival and later, friend. Sonic CD introduced Amy Rose, a female hedgehog with a persistent crush on Sonic. The sequel, Sonic 2, gave Sonic a fox friend named Tails. Sonic Mania Plus is the best version of a great game. For fans wanting a physical copy, the additions and price are outstanding. For those that already own it, the $5 for the DLC is a no-brainer. This really feels like the definitive version of the game. Some mechanics have been altered and a few of the bosses have been tweaked. Sure it was great, but it wasn’t perfect. Like any good DLC pack though, this game also has some tweaks and fixes for the core game. It can become chaotic, but that is sort of what Sonic Mania is all about. There is also a randomization item that mixes up which characters are currently playable. Lives are also earned from boxes as opposed to score and rings. There are still two onscreen, but players can switch between them with the press of a button. This mode also changes up the dynamic of lives and characters. It is like getting a whole new game for next to nothing. Playing through with the new characters or even the original ones feels both fresh and fun. This mixes up stages from the previous game and shines a new light on them. He also has a ground pound technique that does area of effect damage. This character essentially breaks the game, as they are immune to most damage when rolling in his ball. Most likely the lamest Sonic character one could imagine. Platforms: XB1 (reviewed), PS4, Switch, PC Imagine adding just a little more height to any jump. He can glide up and down, which changes things dramatically. His mechanics bring something new to every level in Sonic Mania. The additional content added might be minor in the grand scheme, but what Sonic Mania Plus does is appease fans of the series with just the right amount of fan-service.įirst, let’s look at the new characters. So when Sega announced they were adding some cheap DLC and offering fans a chance at a physical copy complete with art book and reversible Genesis-style cover, it only made sense. Not just a great Sonic game, but an all-around great addition to any collection.
